The World According to Jacob

This is a poem Jacob wrote in May of 2006 for his 6th grade English class:

Force Battle
by
Jacob Neuse

Spring wakes up from a long sleep.
She yawns and then begins.
Though they are brother and sister,
Spring and Winter
Have fought one another
Out through the ages.
So when Spring awakes,
Forces are rallied under the banners
Of the tree,
And the snowflake,
Long will the battle rage,
But in the end, Spring will win
And spend her time nursing the planet.

Alex's Angle

A Bear-able Life

Hi. I'm the kid down the street.
I said “hi” to you once, but
I didn't become your best friend.
So you must hate me.
But my little Pooh Bear loves me, so it's okay.

Everyone laughs at me
Because every day at school
I wear my sister's pants.
So they must hate me.
But my little Pooh Bear doesn't wear pants, so it's okay.

Everyday I wear black,
And eat lunch by myself.
But no one comes up to me.
So they must hate me.
But my little Pooh Bear eats with me, so its okay.

Whenever I talk to people
I talk about death.
And they walk away.
So they must hate me.
But my little Pooh Bear will never die, so it's okay.

I'm not loved by anyone.
Except my family, my extended family,
And my chat partners at www.emo-cutters-and-criers.com
So the world must hate me.
But my little Pooh Bear loves me so it's okay.

I cry because I cut myself
I cut myself because I cry
And because no one loves me.
So I must hate me.
But my little Pooh Bear only bleeds wool stuffing, so it's okay.

Gosh, life would be really depressing if it wasn't for a little Pooh.

This is a poem Alex wrote in November of 2007 for his 11th grade English class. In his own words: “The behavior I chose to criticize is the emo depression and “Everyone hates me” attitude. I chose to criticize this behavior because I find it ridiculous. Anyone who acts like that and thinks that no one likes them is clearly kidding themselves. The two techniques that I chose were Hyperbole and Incongruity. Hyperbole in the way that life is not that bad for anyone. Incongruity in the way lines about the Pooh bear are completely out of place. People should not act like that. They should try to find the happiness in all forms of life.”
