After a less-than-stellar semester in which he earned a sub-1.0 GPA, Alex was officially kicked out of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Palmer High School. He'll still be a ‘Palmer Terror’, but starting this week he's in the regular classes, and has traded German, Chemistry, and Advanced English for Geology, Cooking, and Advanced English. (He was substantially less than thrilled about Cooking, until I pointed out that the students in that class were going to be mostly girls; after that it was ok…) Ironically, rather than being a complete disaster, returning to the mainstream has given Alex a second chance to turn over a new leaf, and his initial efforts (and grades) have been very positive. Mary & I shared my 45th (and her 29th) birthday by attending the annual Wood Badge Feast for local Boy Scout leaders. This was held at a local Elks Lodge, and featured a reasonable dinner, a potluck dessert table, and all the iced tea I could drink. There was also a silent auction of decades of Boy Scout debris that people had cleaned out of their attics and donated; Mary was pleased to be the highest bidder on a charming ceramic bear, which was appropriate because she's a member of the Wood Badge bear patrol. In closing, be prepared for the Monday Morning Epistle to become shorter and somewhat irregular from now on; there isn't a catastrophic reason for this, other than the simple truth that I don't always have the time to write it. At EUCOM I had the luxury of writing the MME at work, but that is not an option here, and between work, church, scouts, homework, and parenthood, finding time to write at home is becoming more and more difficult. KidBit: As Alex read this week's MME over my shoulder, he commented “This MME should be all about me…in a good way, of course.”  PotW: Our kitchen thermometer showing the outside temperature below 0º Fahrenheit this morning; not much below zero, granted, but technically negative nonetheless.
