Pictures from St. Veit im Pongau

4 – 10 January, 2004

Garion riding his snow camel, with the St. Veit church in the background.
Taken from the same spot as the picture above, but looking in the opposite direction.  The castle perched on the hillside was turned into a convent by the Archbishop of Salzburg in the 12th century, on the condition that the nuns offer hospice for the terminally ill.  They still do to this day.
One of the many Fußweg (trails) that Garion and I tromped along, usually between fields.  This particular trail led to a small, partially-collapsed barn that appeared to be full of firewood.
This is the start of the Loipe (cross-country ski track) in St. Veit, taken about noon on Tuesday.  It snowed heavily all morning, and remained very foggy in the valley throughout the day; that's the sun trying to burn through the fog!
Starting to climb up one of the nearby Alps; this was taken at about 3,000 feet when we first started breaking out of the fog into clearer skies.
At the highest point of the same climb, up around 3,500 feet by now.  It's difficult to discern in the photograph, but there is a mountain hidden behind the clouds on the left side: you can just make out the peak in the gap between the clouds near the edge.
There is actually a good-sized stream just to the right of the road, and this house and barn are literally built over a bend in the water.  I thought that the "Falling Rocks" warning sign was a nice touch
Most of these icicles are taller than I am, which puts them in the 6 to 7 foot range.
